Here are some of the key guidelines for all diabetics:
- Inspect your feet daily.
- Never soak your feet.
- Wash your feet only with warm water, never hot water. Very high temperatures can cause burns or blisters.
- Don’t smoke.
- Never walk barefooted.
- Check the insides of your shoes for foreign objects before putting them on.
- Get regular foot exams from a trained foot/ankle specialist, at least once or twice yearly.
Many diabetic foot complications can be effectively prevented or treated with appropriate care. The Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Foot & Ankle Team of doctors is specifically trained to treat the diabetic foot. Please call for us for an appointment if you have any concerns.
