Orthopaedic Oncology
With our partnership with the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, patients receive the highest quality of care from nationally recognized healthcare institutions.
Cancer is a complicated disease. Sometimes, it spreads (metastasizes) to nearby bones and weakens them. This can lead to painful and disabling fractures. In other cases, similar complications can occur when cancers, like soft tissue sarcomas, start in or around the bones.
Rothman Orthopaedic Institute specialists provide treatment for bone cancers and long-term skeletal care for cancer survivors in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Kimmel Cancer Center.

Is it right for you?
If cancer affects your bones, Rothman’s Orthopaedic Oncology specialists work closely with you and your cancer team to recommend surgical treatments including tumor removal or minimally invasive surgery to insert metal support rods (prophylactic fixation) in bones at risk of breaking.
We also treat soft tissue sarcomas, different types of cancer which start in the muscle, tendons, fat, lymph and blood vessels, and nerves in the arms, legs, chest and abdomen.
Our specialists are part of a multidisciplinary team that includes a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, orthopedic oncology surgeon, pathologist, and musculoskeletal radiologist. Together, this team develops a personalized treatment for your case and follows you closely to monitor and adjust your treatment as appropriate. Treatments vary by the type and location of the cancer, but they may involve surgery and radiation therapy, and, in some cases, chemotherapy..
