
Dr. Gerena is a board-certified, fellowship-trained, primary care sports medicine physician specializing in non-surgical orthopedics and sports medicine. His practice involves the evaluation and management of non-surgical musculoskeletal and sports injuries, including fractures, sprains and strains, osteoarthritis, chronic tendon injuries, and sports-related concussions. Dr. Gerena treats these issues with a wide spectrum of options, including medications, injections, physical therapy, bracing, and interventional procedures. He is trained in performing ultrasound-guided procedures, including injections, nerve blocks, percutaneous tenotomy, orthobiologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and prolotherapy.
Dr. Gerena grew up in Broward County and graduated from UCF (Go Knights!). He then earned his medical degree from the Florida State University College of Medicine (Go Noles!). He went on to complete his family medicine residency at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC. He completed his primary care sports medicine fellowship at the renowned Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, AL. After training, he joined the Orthopaedic Department at MUSC as an assistant professor for three years. He then met his wife and moved to Gallipolis, Ohio, where he worked for two years with Holzer Health System as a sports medicine physician. He is excited to return to Florida with his family and join Rothman Orthopaedics.
Dr. Gerena has served as the team physician for multiple college and professional teams. He was a team physician for the South Carolina Stingrays, the Charleston Riverdogs, the Charleston Battery, and the College of Charleston for three years. He was the head team physician for the University of Rio Grande. He volunteers multiple times a year with USA Boxing to cover their national tournaments. Once a year, he provides medical care for the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Dr. Gerena was awarded the “Highest Rated Provider” award with Holzer Health System in 2025. He is an active member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Gerena lives with his wife and their two pets: a whippet, named Aero, and a black cat, named Sirius Black. They enjoy international travel and comedy shows. They are avid visitors to the Universal Wizarding World of Harry Potter. He roots for Florida State Football, the Miami Marlins, and the Miami Dolphins. Dr. Gerena loves to talk all things boxing, so please speak up if you are a fan!
