Wrist Fractures

A wrist fracture is a common injury, but with the right treatment, it can be successfully managed. If you or a loved one have suffered a wrist fracture, you may be wondering what steps to take next. At Rothman Orthopaedics, we're here to guide you through the journey from injury to recovery, ensuring you receive the best care every step of the way.

The Injury

A wrist fracture occurs when one of the bones in the wrist breaks. The most commonly fractured bone in the wrist is the radius, which is located on the thumb side of the forearm. The immediate symptom is usually pain, which can sometimes subside temporarily and return as a deep ache. In more severe fractures, you may also have difficulty gripping objects with the injured hand.

Diagnosis

The first step in treating a wrist fracture is obtaining an accurate diagnosis. A physician will assess whether a fracture has occurred, identify which bone is affected, and determine the nature of the break. Fractures can vary in type—ranging from clean, straight breaks to more complex, shattered fractures. The doctor will also check for bone fragmentation and displacement. Typically, a combination of a physical exam and X-rays will be used to thoroughly evaluate the injury.

Treatment

Treatment for a wrist fracture depends on the severity and type of break. In many cases, a fracture can be managed without surgery, using a splint or cast to immobilize the wrist as it heals. However, if the fracture involves fragmented or displaced bones, surgery may be required to realign the bones. Surgical options can include the use of plates, screws, or pins to hold the bones in place during recovery.

Recovery

After the cast is placed, it's crucial to follow the doctor's instructions for home care to ensure proper healing. Once the cast is removed, you may experience some stiffness or weakness in the wrist. Physical therapy is often recommended to restore strength, flexibility, and function to the wrist, helping you return to your normal activities.
