The triangular fibrocartilage complex connects the bones of your forearm with your wrist. This structure is made up of ligaments, tendons and cartilage and helps support and stabilize your wrist.
Causes
- Falling on your hand or wrist
- A sudden twist of your hand or wrist
- Fracturing your radius
- Aging
Signs and Symptoms
- Sounds, like clicks or pops when you rotate your wrist or forearm.
- Pain with rotating your wrist
- Pain on the outside of your wrist by your pinky
- Unable to grip things
Diagnosis
A physical exam will consist of the orthopaedic checking for any tender areas as well as looking at range of motion and strength of your wrist.
Imaging test such as an X-ray or MRI will be ordered to determine if there is a fracture of the severity of any torn ligaments.
Treatment Options
- Minor TFCC tears can heal on their own with RICE. If symptoms interfere with your daily living activities your provider may recommend:
- Medication- NSAIDs
- Bracing
- Injections
- Physical or Occupational Therapy
- If conservative treatment fails then Surgery may be recommended.
Prevention
- Strengthening exercises
- Warm-up Properly before and after activity
- Pay attention when walking, running or working on uneven surfaces.
