The shoulder is a ball and socket joint made up of three bones; upper arm ( humerus), shoulder blade ( Scapula), and collarbone (clavicle). This joint is surrounded by a capsule and also contains synovial fluid which helps to lubricate the shoulder. In Frozen shoulder the smooth tissues of the shoulder capsule become thick, stiff, and inflamed.
The cause of frozen shoulder is unknown some risk factors may include
- Diabetes
- Other diseases such as hypothyroidism, Parkinson's disease and cardiac disease.
- Immobilization from injury or surgery.
Symptoms:
- Dull and Achy
- Limited Range of Motion
Treatment options include both non-surgical and surgical route’s.
- Non-surgical treatment may be prescribed first to avoid surgery. This usually includes your physician prescribing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication as well as physical therapy.
- Surgical options will be discussed between you and your physician if non-surgical treatment has not helped. These treatments may include manipulation under anesthesia and shoulder arthroscopy.
