Benefits of Hip Preservation Surgery

Benefits of Hip Preservation Surgery

People who experience hip injuries may exhibit symptoms such as pain, discomfort, muscle weakness, and even loss of mobility. Certain hip problems can significantly impede daily activities and quality of life. At Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, we not only understand the intricacies of major non-arthritic hip conditions, such as labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement/FAI (among others); we also routinely treat them. Many Rothman Orthopaedics patients have found relief in hip preservation surgery from our skilled orthopaedic surgeons.

Four Conditions Addressed by Leaders In Hip Preservation Surgery

No one wants to struggle with hip pain and discomfort—and you don’t need to. At Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, our orthopaedic surgeons are national leaders in performing hip arthroscopy. It’s our goal to relieve pain and discomfort as safely and effectively as possible.

Hip arthroscopy is a unique, minimally-invasive outpatient hip preservation surgery that offers patients several benefits.

Take a look at four hip conditions that respond positively to arthroscopy:

  1. Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
Individuals diagnosed with FAI have an extra bone growth in the bone(s) that form the hip joint. The additional bone growth creates friction when the bones rub together. The three variations of FAI—pincer, cam, and combined impingement—typically lead to pain, stiffness, and limping once the joint becomes damaged.

  2. Hip Labrum Tear
Many athletes are all too familiar with labral hip tears. When the labrum cartilage between the ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) experiences either abrupt trauma—through a sports-related collision—or through repetitive movement over time, the result can be a labral tear. The primary symptom of a hip labral tear is deep pain resonating in the hip joint.

  3. Snapping Hip Syndrome
Although typically painless and innocuous, snapping hip syndrome can be frustrating. A snapping hip condition is a byproduct of tightened muscles and tendons around the hip. Symptoms of snapping hip syndrome occur as an audible popping or snapping sensation in the hip during certain types of movements—walking, getting up from a chair, and other types of exercise.

  4. Trochanteric Pain Syndrome
This extremely common condition can oftentimes be treated non-surgically with medications, injections and physical therapy.Unfortunately, this constellation of disorders does not always resolve with conservative measures. Both trochanteric bursitis and gluteal tendon tears are treatable with arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques with excellent outcomes. Our Sports Medicine hip preservation specialists are skilled and experienced in taking care of your specific needs.

How Does Hip Preservation Surgery Work?

Hip arthroscopy is an innovative approach that utilizes fiber-optic cameras and small instruments to treat painful hip conditions. While hip arthroscopy addresses a number of hip conditions, it also provides patients with several benefits over more invasive hip surgery techniques.

Benefits of arthroscopy hip prevention surgery include:

  • Smaller Incisions

  • Quicker recovery time

  • Minimal scarring

  • Eventual return to pre-injury activity levels for athletes and those under the age of 60

At Rothman Orthopaedics, we’re dedicated to helping you return to the activities and lifestyle to which you’re accustomed.
