Rothman Research Improving Patient Care

The Rothman Orthopaedic Institute is more than just a provider of high-quality orthopaedic care. It is also a major center of research where new treatment techniques are developed and tested. This means that Rothman patients receive the most up-to-date care available.

“The Research Department at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute/Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is very active in the field of musculoskeletal diseases,” says Javad Parvizi, MD, vice chairman of research and director of joint research at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute.

“Our research projects have direct clinical relevance and can translate into more efficient, cutting-edge care for patients.”

According to Parvizi, research studies at Rothman cover nearly all areas of orthopaedics, including the hip, knee, spine, shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, foot, ankle and sports injuries. Findings from these studies are used to improve patient care and decrease complications.
“One of our current research studies is aimed at devising strategies to minimize complications associated with joint replacement and improve overall outcomes for patients who need this surgery,” says Dr. Parvizi. “Our low rate of complications at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute proves that discoveries we’ve made based on this research are working.”

The Research Department is also actively involved in clinical research trials. These studies range from national, multi-center trials to study the newest medications and devices to surgeon-initiated studies focused solely on Rothman patients.

“Clinical trials can be very beneficial to patients because they can offer treatment options that are not available elsewhere,” says Dr. Parvizi. The Research Department consists of 30 to 35 fellows, visiting scholars and support staff. Research fellows come from all over the world to further their knowledge and skills and share their experience.

In addition, Rothman physicians have published numerous peer-reviewed papers in highly ranked medical and orthopaedic journals and have presented at many national and international conferences.
